New rules of the game

The new EU regulations on textile waste are getting closer! Two months ago, the Council of the EU, currently chaired by the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and the European Parliament reached an agreement on the revision of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD). The common position concerns, inter alia, new rules for textile waste, which is an important step towards strengthening the circular economy in Europe.

What does the revision foresee?

  • Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) — textile manufacturers will be required to fund waste collection and treatment systems.
  • Mechanisms against ultrafast fashion — aimed at reducing the uncontrolled introduction of cheap, non-durable clothing.
  • Distinguish between textile waste and used clothing — which is crucial in the context of material flow and recyclers' responsibilities.

Once the legislative work is completed in 24 languages, it will be possible to formally adopt the directive.

Waste Service Group closely follows the legislative directions of the EU, which directly affect the shape of the recycling market. The changes in the area of textiles are another step towards strengthening the material processing sector and a clear signal that producer responsibility and quality recovery are crucial for the future of European industry.
